CRASA 13th AGM
(25-26 March 2010)

Welcome to CRASA

WHO ARE WE

Communications Regulators’ Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) is an association of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) regulators and other stakeholders in the information and communications industry in Southern Africa.
CRASA was set up in 1997 within the framework of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Transport, Communications and Meteorology. This was a response to SADC leadership common vision which recognized that individual information and communications markets, in the region, were small to have comparative advantage on the global arena as well as attract adequate investment to build modern infrastructure for provision of universally-accessed ICTs services. In essence, our historical linkage to our regional economic community – SADC, positions us better to lobby for a conducive regulatory environment to investment through out the region.
We have been providing a platform, for more than a decade, where issues are debated and agreed upon on how the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) can integrate the development processes of its ICT policies and regulations. As one of the oldest regional ICT regulatory association in Africa, CRASA draws from its well established network and an in depth understanding of the SADC region complex regulatory environment. Essentially, this allows the greater capability of our Members to be heard at regional and international ICT fora.

OUR ACTIVITIES

Our principal activities include:

  • Developing model ICT regulatory frameworks and tools;
  • facilitating capacity building of our Members and Associate Members;
  • providing opportunities for face to face and virtual networking for Members and Associate Members;
  • providing a meeting point for senior ICT policy makers, regulators, operators, equipment manufacturing and vendors to a forum for addressing various challenges in the ICT sector in the region; and
  • Lobbying for harmonisation of regional ICT policies and regulations.
OUR MEMBERS

Our members are from thirteen regulatory institutions in the SADC region and our footprints can be seen in Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
We also aspire to building a participative and conducive regulatory environment for ICT for Development in the region and allow the other stakeholders in the industry to have a say in the development process of policies and regulations.  CRASA thus changed its Constitution to allow for other stakeholders in the information and communications industry, apart from regulators, to participate in the development of the SADC ICTs sector through Associate Membership. This development has empowered the private sector leadership and individuals to participate in shaping and influencing policy and regulation on regional integration and trade relating to ICTs.
