The Communications Regulators’ Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) is convening the second meeting of the Economic Regulation Committee (ERC) meeting from 21st November 2022. The meeting will be hosted by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) at the Madinat Al Bahr Hotel inZanzibar from 09h00 to 17h00 Central African Time (CAT).

The meeting will be preceded by the following two capacity building sessions:

I.              Collection, Analysis and Reporting of Broadband Indicators and ICT Price Baskets

In cognizant of the importance of broadband in enhancing socio-economic welfare and the critical role that broadband infrastructure and usage plays in the performance of key economic sectors in SADC, CRASA annually collects indicators on telecommunications data and the internet to accurately track digital development in the region in achieving the SADC Broadband targets 2025. The objective of this training is to enhance the capacity of CRASA Members in the collection, analysis and reporting of broadband deployment and usage gaps so that key areas that need policy intervention can be identified. The training will be delivered by the experts from the InternationalTelecommunications Union (ITU) from 2November2022.

II.            TelecommunicationsBundling and Tariff

This training session aims to enhance the understanding on CRASA Members on issues related to TelecommunicationsBundling and Tariffing for enabling effective and efficient competition in theTelecommunications market. The focus areas for the workshop includes review of economic theory of bundling, competition and welfare effect of bundling, bundling in telecommunications, regulatory approaches to bundling, margin squeeze and regulatory responses and policies on bundling. This training will be delivered by Dotecon, an international economic consulting firm specialised in telecommunications competition and policy strategies on the 2November 2022.

These workshops bring together economic regulation managers and experts in the telecommunicationsStatistics from CRASA Members to share knowledge on various strategies to ensure successful development and implementation of regional guidelines as well as exchange information on possible initiatives to address economic regulation challenges in the region.

The Economic Regulation Committee is currently chaired by the Mauritius with Namibia as the as the Vice-Chairperson.
