The Communications Regulators’ Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) successfully held its 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lilongwe, Malawi, bringing together communications regulators from across the region to discuss the futureof regulation in an increasingly digital world.
Hosted by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), the AGM provided an important platform for Members to review progress made over the past year, exchange experiences, and strengthen regional cooperation on matters affecting the communications sector.
The meeting took place against a backdrop of rapid technological change and growing digital transformation across Southern Africa. Discussions focused on emerging regulatory issues, including digital connectivity, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, consumer protection, universal access to communications services, and the need for harmonised regulatory approaches across the region.
Delegates also considered reports and recommendations from CRASA’s Standing Committees and reviewed the Association’s strategic priorities, programmes, and achievements. Members reaffirmed their commitment to working together to create an enabling regulatory environment that promotes innovation, investment, and inclusive digital development throughout the region.
A key message emerging from the AGM was the importance of collaboration among regulators, governments, industry players, academia, and development partners in addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by the evolving digital ecosystem. Participants emphasised that regional cooperation remains essential in ensuring that regulatory frameworks keep pace with technological advancements while safeguarding the interests of consumers.
The AGM also served as an opportunity to strengthen relationships among Members and partners, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions to common regulatory challenges facing Southern Africa.
Speaking on the significance of the meeting, Members highlighted CRASA’s continued role as a platform for regulatory collaboration, knowledge sharing, and policy harmonisation in the region. Through its work, CRASA continues to supportMember regulators in promoting accessible, affordable, secure, and high quality communications services for all citizens.
